Tent Occupation to Draw Attention to Empty Homes

Tent Occupation to Draw Attention to Empty Homes

Tonight, tenants from the Tāmaki community and their supporters will be pitching tents around empty homes in the Tāmaki area to draw attention to the housing crisis.

Auckland has 30,000 ghost homes which sit empty while homelessness increases. Some of these empty homes in Auckland are state houses which have sat empty waiting on land values to increase so that developers can profit.

In Glen Innes, where the occupation will commence, there are hundreds of empty state houses. Some of these houses have been empty for up to 5 years while families in this community and all over New Zealand are living in their cars, overcrowded housing and in substandard conditions.

This occupation demands that these empty homes, and those sitting empty all over New Zealand, get filled immediately with families.

Join the Tāmaki Housing Group for an overnight occupation on 15 September 2016 at 5:30pm, meeting at 16 Taniwha Street Glen Innes, and let the government know that a tent is not a home.
