Corrections Got It Right with Stance on Gangs in Prisons
CORRECTIONS GOT IT RIGHT WITH STANCE ON GANGS IN PRISONS
9th November 2016
“Corrections got it right and we congratulate Ray Smith and his team on a job well done”Scott Guthrie
This has got nothing to do with Ngapari Nui's iwi, Ngati Ruanui; this is about one man who is a member of a criminal organisation which has an unethical law breaking code.
“We are continually told that for Black Power and the Mongrel Mob, its members are its iwi and as far as a gang is concerned, its rules and values take precedence over any of its members tribal affiliations” Scott Guthrie
Scott Guthrie, Sensible Sentencing Trust’s National Spokesperson on Gangs commented an "active gang member" is a person who still subscribes to values that the rest of society finds repugnant. Gangs have initiation criteria which includes rape and murder; a code which says women are chattels to be used in various ways, not to mention a complete disregard of the laws which govern every other New Zealand citizen.
“Gangs are the enemies of the civil society decent people inhabit. Every "value" they stand for is offensive to decent law abiding citizens. We strongly support Minister Collins’ view that the only place for gang members in a prison is behind bars” David Garrett
This man clearly values his gang membership over everything else. If he really wanted to do some good among prisoners, he would simply hand his patch back as many other former gang members have done.
