NZ’s largest union steps up to support quake-hit Kiwis

New Zealand’s biggest trade union is opening up its support forums to all New Zealand workers who’ve been affected by this week’s earthquakes.

The Public Service Association Te Pukenga Here Tikanga Mahi has set up an earthquake support forum on its website, which the public can access regardless of whether or not they’re a member.

"This latest series of quakes has been unsettling for many PSA members, both in Wellington and further afield", PSA National Secretary Glenn Barclay says.

"A number of public buildings are still closed, and while some employers have been excellent at keeping their staff informed, there’s still a need for information.

"With a number of public buildings still closed, many PSA members want to know about working offsite of from home, while others need support or have questions about their rights.

"We hope the forum will fill that gap, and allow people a space to talk."

All PSA members can comment in the forums, and non-members can view them.

"We decided to make the information publicly available, to show non-members how unions can help when the going gets tough," Mr Barclay says.

"PSA staffers and members in Christchurch have been sharing the knowledge they’ve acquired, while others are expressing support for public sector workers in the hardest-hit areas.

"In times of stress, New Zealanders band together and get things done - our members are no exception."
