UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 25 November

Right to Life supports the United Nations Declaration for the elimination of violence against women made by the general assembly of the United Nations in 1993. The United Nations is applauded for its Universal Declaration of human rights and its many conventions upholding human rights. The UN has done much to eliminate violence against women. There is however much that is wrong in this powerful organisation.

The UN bureaucracy promotes its own ideology and ignores the wishes not only of the UN General Assembly but the Security Council as well. Right to Life is hopeful that the new Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, who is strongly pro-women and pro-life will deal with this serious issue when he takes up his appointment this year.

Right to Life is disappointed that violence against women is being inflicted on women under the auspices of the United Nations. The United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA] under the direction of Helen Clark is promoting violence against women by actively supporting China’s current policy on restriction of children supported by forced abortions, sterilisations, punitive fines, imprisonment and destruction of homes. The law was changed this year to allow for two children, however the human rights abuses continue. Right to Life believes that it contributes to the 500 Chinese women who commit suicide every day in China. It is disappointing that the New Zealand government continues to applaud the work of UNFPA and provides funding of over $4 million per annum. UNFPA encourages other nations to follow the example of China in implementing currently, a two child family policy.

Why does the New Zealand government refuse to recognise the violence inflicted on Chinese women with forced abortions and sterilisations? Is the government afraid that speaking out against human rights abuses may impede trade? Is the government reluctant to defend the oppressed Chinese women, because it is Helen Clark who presides over the oppressive UNFPA?

Right to Life believes that women concerned for their own health and the safety of their unborn child should avoid entering a Family Planning clinic. We continue to ask the government when is it going to stop funding this organisation which promotes a culture of death.

The murder of the unborn is not a human right; never has been and never will be. It should be recognised as violence against women and their innocent and defenceless unborn. Right to Life hopes, that now that our nation has a seat on the UN Security Council, we will use our voice to speak up loudly in defence of women and the unborn and to stop UNFPA, UNICEF, the Human Rights Council and the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women from promoting a culture of death and violence against women.
