Wellington sisters 'shout out' another message
Here's the follow-up to this story recently published
about us...the NOPESISTERS - Wellington sisters' who
created a MastectoTee social enterprise project.
In our daily lives we work as a barista
(Brit) and actor (Johanna) and what began as an inspired,
small, social enterprise project a few months ago, is now
growing like crazy. We love to share strong, personal
messages that we really believe in with our fashion for a
cause. Here is our continuing story....
*BREAKING NEWS * THIS
WEEK THE NOPESISTERS SHARE THEIR NEW TEE with a social media
launch.
The sisters "have high
hopes" for a new T-shirt, which tackles the important topic
of sexual consent. It follows the huge success of their
breast cancer awareness MastectoTee, and once again has
personal significance for them.
"The aim of our new tee is to empower survivors of sexual violence and abuse while also giving profits to a partner charity" Nopesisters designer, Brittany Cosgrove says.
For these young women, their own personal experience with sexual assault and its long term impact, has driven their huge concern over the high statistics of sexual abuse and violence in New Zealand, and prompted them to design a NOPE shirt focused on sexual consent.
As they were designing their shirt over recent weeks, news stories highlighted a clear need to speak out about rape culture, with ongoing calls for better sex education around consent. This encouraged them both to join the #icantkeepquiet global movement to resist and speak out through their fashion creations.
Their latest charity shirt 'shouts' a message to all genders to respect and listen to each other during sex, with one simple word - NOPE - stitched onto black or white tees.
"This generic colloquial word, worn boldly across the chest," Johanna says "speaks out to remind everyone to respect the 'NOPE means NO' message, when it comes to sex.
"It's simple" says Brittany "It's just black and white - everyone should understand it."
The charity benefiting from this tee is the Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation which works to support victims of sexual abuse of all kinds with counselling, advocacy and support services in Wellington and Porirua.
"It's the perfect fit for the NOPE tee and having a personal connection with a local charity is very important to us." say the sisters.
"We know from their director Conor Twyford that Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP are experiencing a spike in demand for their services following recent publicity and protest around rape culture, so they could use some help themselves." Brittany says.
They want to have tees available, made by the team at A1 Embroidery in Petone, for the upcoming #icantkeepquiet flash mob planned by Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation in Wellington on April 4th.

An invitation yesterday to MastectoTee wearers to pre-order the new NOPE tees has already brought in multiple orders and amazing messages of support for the enterprise. Messages like this one : "Can I just say this is such a cool shirt design and cause! As a woman who has seen the effects of sexual violence I have such a heart for supporting it in any way that I can! You guys are seriously amazing for bring awareness to a cause that isn't talked about a lot!
"We want to make cool stuff with a strong message, that gives money to people who really need it, to do good work." Brittany explains.
