Weapons Expo plans exposed

Media Release: Weapons Expo plans exposed

Date: 31 May 2017

From: Auckland Peace Action

"Today Auckland Peace Action took action at BECA Engineering, the company hosting a weapons expo planning meeting at their Auckland offices."

"Beca is a major sponsor of the annual weapons expo held by the NZ Defence Industry Association. This lobby group is in the business of making a profit from war. Our demonstration is an effort to bring home the brutality of what these companies actually do," said APA spokeswoman Virginia Lambert.

"The annual weapons expo is scheduled to be in Wellington on October 10 & 11. Our demonstration today was a message to the weapons lobby that we will be there in October to take action to stop their expo because this obscenity cannot continue."

"The nature of modern warfare has meant that those who are culpable for the deaths of innocent civilians are also removed and detached. They never have to witness the carnage of their creations. We have attempted to shatter that detachment by bringing blood to the offices of BECA."

"Inside this building the NZDIA make plans for hosting the 2017 weapons expo, just as they do deals and make plans to feed the arms trade, whether it be through profit or technologies designed for killing."

"Last year we successfully blockaded the weapons expo and prevented over 300 arms dealers from entering the conference. We will continue to oppose companies who make their profit from war."

"There can be no peace and no justice while companies such as these leech off human misery."
