New Transport Plan will unlock Auckland

The unprecedented investment in Auckland's transport announced today will be a welcome relief for all Aucklanders as it unlocks the city and provides more transport choice says Generation Zero.

Auckland Director for Generation Zero, Leroy Beckett says; “By building new light rail, prioritising buses and further cycling network upgrades, this new transport budget will unlock Auckland. We’re supportive of the Government’s new transport plan and will be pushing for it to be delivered as soon as possible to provide relief and greater transport choices for Aucklanders.”

“With the $6 billion funding gap in transport now closed, Auckland can move forward with essential investments in it’s public transport, walking and cycling networks that this new transport budget lays out. This plan signals Auckland is now on track to deal with the transport problems that have plagued the city.”

“As Aucklanders, we are finally getting what has been required and demanded for the past decade. Every investment in public transport has been met with dramatically increased demand and enthusiasm. Auckland will finally build the citywide rapid transit network we have been waiting for since the 1950’s.”

“Having Auckland Council, Auckland Transport, and the Government sharing a vision is a rarity in Tāmaki Makaurau. We are hopeful this will increase the speed and quality of delivery for these vital projects.”

“To get the most from this investment in rapid transport the council and government should work to allow growth through intensified developments along these newly unlocked rapid transit lines.”

“We are especially excited by the confirmation of a Light Rail network for Auckland, including a long awaited public transport link to Auckland Airport. Modern, high capacity & high speed Light Rail will transform travel for those living in south-west and north-west Auckland”

“The only project we are concerned about in today’s announcement is Mill Road. We would like to see the project scrutinised heavily before construction, as smaller scale improvements could fix the safety issues identified, and free up even more money to be spend on improving safety on local neighbourhoods around Auckland.”

“Half of Auckland’s carbon emissions come from transport. This will only continue to grow unless we make a shift towards public transport, walking and cycling. Today’s announcement is a much needed step towards a future with fewer emissions, cleaner air and less pollution.”
