Chamber Welcomes Holidays Act Review

"The Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the announcement by the Government of a tripartite review of the Holidays Act 2003," says Chief Executive Leeann Watson.

The existing Act, and the way it calculates entitlements, is problematic in today’s environment of variable work patterns. It was conceived with a traditional five-day working week as the model, and news it is to be reviewed in extremely positive.

"It has created uncertainty around holiday entitlements because the calculations involved do not cope with the complexities of modern ways of working," said Ms Watson.

"There has also been confusion around how relevant daily pay is worked out, and how you decide if a holiday would otherwise have been an ordinary work day."

"It’s also great that both business and unions are coming together to be involved in this. All parties are looking for simplification and certainty - everyone wants a solution."

"No employer wants to underpay their staff. Business wants a system that is easy to manage, fit for purpose and ensures that everyone is able to easily calculate entitlements, and nobody is left out of pocket," said Leeann Watson.
