Vaping crackdown is windfall for big tobacco

23 NOVEMBER 2018

The Government’s decision to crack down on vaping is great news for big tobacco, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “The Associate Minister of Health has been made subservient to the interests of big tobacco.”

“We had hoped the Minister would show some bravery on using new products to improve health outcomes. Instead, the Government is making safer alternatives to smoking less attractive so that people keep smoking fags and paying exorbitant amounts of tax.”

“Not only does this run counter to governments’ efforts overseas to get smokers onto vaping, it will make New Zealand’s goal of a smoke free 2025 impossible to achieve. It’s picking money over peoples’ lives.”
