Tobacco Nazis Get New Job

"New Zealand businesses are once again being sacrificed to political bickering", says Peter Cresswell, Libertarianz Environment Deregulation Spokesman. Labour & Alliance bandits, who weren't able to force their proposed new food monitoring quango on the food processing industry, have instead left them in the lurch.

All remaining food monitoring responsibilities were to have been transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Maf) - which is bizarre enough, considering how well private businesses and their insurers could manage if left alone - but this was too much for the socialists, who wanted a new quango. Their reason? Says Cresswell: "Maf do not apparently wield their jackboots with the alacrity the Luddites would wish!"

The unfortunate result is that food monitoring will instead be carried out by the Ministry of Health, whose hands should be full - you would think - shoring up the die-while-you-wait health system. "Expect," warns Cresswell, "to see the Health Department's Tobacco Nazis unleashed any time soon, in a gleeful attempt to ban any foodstuff containing fat, sugar, or flavour. And expect to see food processing companies move offshore. Soon.
