American Express Offers Tips For Online Shoppers
AUCKLAND ( Nov. 29, 2000) – Online shopping is expected to be big business this Christmas, with a majority of New Zealand households now in a position to make purchases over the internet.
Research by American Express shows there continues to be some nervousness amongst New Zealanders about shopping online, so the company has suggested some simple steps to take before making that e-purchase.
American Express New Zealand Country Manager Anna Hynes recommends consumers examine a website’s privacy policy before shopping.
“Look for sites that clearly explain why data is collected and how it is used,” she said.
Ms Hynes suggested consumers look for online sites that use encryption to protect confidential information when it is transmitted.
It is also a good idea to make sure there is another way to contact an online company – perhaps by telephone or facsimile – to address any questions or concerns about an order.
Ms Hynes also urged consumers to understand an online shopping site’s policy on returns or exchanges, and to check out a website’s policy on freight costs.
“Make sure you understand exactly how much you are paying for shipping costs and what the delivery time will be,” she said.
As well as ensuring websites are secure, Ms Hynes said consumers should use a secure payment method.
For American Express Cardmembers, the company offers an Online Guarantee that ensures they will not be held responsible for any unauthorised charges made on their Cards while shopping over the internet.
If American Express Cardmembers discover any fraudulent transaction has taken place with their Card as a result of an online shopping trip, then they will not be held responsible for the charge. The guarantee applies for all New Zealand American Express Cardmembers shopping on the web, regardless of where the site is based.
The Online Guarantee is in addition to the American Express Cardmember Terms and Conditions. These already ensure that if Cardmembers are billed for merchandise online that never arrives, they can arrange a credit for the transaction through American Express.
“With this sort of security, Christmas
shopping online should be a breeze this year, " Ms Hynes
said.
