Doctor Global at Medico-Legal Conference
Online consulting service to present at New Zealand Medico-Legal Conference
Doctor Global founder Dr Tom Mulholland, is pleased that his organisation is speaking at the annual Medico-legal conference in Wellington this week.
He is one of a panel of three, including NZ Medical Association Chairperson Dr Pippa MacKay, and University of Otago Healthcare Law and Ethics lecturer Dr Fiona McCrimmon who will discuss the future of online diagnosis in New Zealand.
Dr Mullholland says some of the conference attendees were his initial critics when doctorglobal was established in 1999. "It is personally satisfying to be asked to join with these people. It shows our service has been recognised as being legitimate and provides some recognition and credit for the organisation," he said.
He will also present a session on setting up and running an e-clinic, outlining the positives and the pitfalls. Dr Mulholland believes the internet is here to stay and it just offers a new way of doing an old thing.
Doctorglobal has set up an on-line health record so patients are empowered to take control of their own health record. "We have made the process as secure as Internet banking. Instead of banking your money you can now bank your health records in a cost effective and efficient way " he said.
Dr Mulholland says this represents a new opportunity for patients to have control over their health, and believes it is only scratching the surface of what the future holds.
He will be discussing the challanges associated with setting up a new e-business including system development, on line privacy considerations and national and international trends for Internet medicine.
"We are improving health access and creating efficiency. On-line medicine is the way of the future and our system has the potential to save the health system millions as well as saving lives."
