Re: GE-Free Rallies

Letter To Editor From Chairman Of Life Sciences Network - GE-Free Rallies

Dear Editor,

GE Free NZ is organising a rally against genetic modification on the day the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification delivers its report to the Government. GE Free NZ was one of many organisations opposed to genetic modification which gave extensive evidence to the Royal Commission at its hearings. The Royal Commissioners spent more than a year and six million dollars investigating the pros and cons of genetic modification. Their task is to recommend what role, if any, genetic modification should have in New Zealand’s future. None of us know what those recommendations will be. The report will be released to the public on Monday the 30th July.

We can only make the best decisions as a society if we are prepared to listen to all points of view as the Royal Commission has done.

By having this rally before the Royal Commission report has been made public GE Free NZ are indicating they don’t want to listen. As a nation based on biology, this is one of the most important strategic issues our generation will have to deal with concerning the future of our people and our environment. If members of GE Free NZ are really concerned about the future well-being of our country they should welcome this report with open minds.

Yours sincerely

William Rolleston
Timaru
Chairman, New Zealand Life Sciences Network Inc.
