Stem Cell Research - Right To Life NZ

PRESS RELEASE RIGHT TO LIFE NEW ZEALAND

Right to Life New Zealand supports the Judeo-Christian sanctity of life ethic from conception to natural death and is opposed to embryonic stem cell research.

Stem cell research on human embryos is a violation of human rights and the inalienable right to life.

The Society applauds the decision of President George Bush to refuse Federal funding for research on tens of thousands of discarded human embryos obtained from fertility treatment.

We are however, disappointed that he approved Federal funding for research on 60 existing lines of stem cells taken from embryos. Stem cell research on human beings is a violation of human rights and a denial of the inalienable right to life of the human embryo.

We fully support research with stem cells derived from ethical sources i.e. adult tissue body cells and from the blood of the umbilical cord of newborn babies, and look forward to the day when medical sciences will be able to assist people suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

We share President Bush's belief that "human life is a sacred gift from our Creator" that should be respected and protected.

This Society urges our Government to encourage ethical stem cell research and to legislate to prohibit embryonic stem cell research.
