PeopleSoft Redefines Mobile Access

Breakthrough Mobile Technology to Drive User Adoption

Auckland — August 28, 2001 — PeopleSoft Inc. (Nasdaq: PSFT) announced today the next generation of mobile technology. Leveraging PeopleSoft’s proven, pure internet architecture, the innovative technology solution revolutionises access for mobile professionals.

The new mobile technology, called the PeopleSoft Mobile Agent, represents a technology breakthrough that will leapfrog legacy client/server solutions for enterprise mobile applications. Until now, mobile solutions have been extremely complex with slow installs and updates, resulting in low user adoption. The applications based on the PeopleSoft Mobile Agent have a device footprint hundreds-of-times smaller than current mobile applications. As a result, users will receive seamless installs and updates, increasing adoption and dramatically improving implementation success rates.

The PeopleSoft Mobile Agent is the enterprise application industry’s first pure internet approach to mobile computing. Based on HTML, HTTP, and XML, this new technology extends the PeopleSoft Internet Architecture to mobile professionals, enabling users to work offline, then synchronise data quickly and easily from anywhere — all that is required is an internet connection.

David Webster, Managing Director Australia and New Zealand, PeopleSoft added, “Our workforce is constantly on the move, and access to information is vital. With this breakthrough in mobile access, users will have an easy reach into data and enterprise applications on the road - that’s a powerful proposition.”

“PeopleSoft’s mobile technology will solve the problems of legacy solutions that have made mobile professionals reluctant to embrace them,” said Ram Gupta, Executive Vice President, Products and Technology for PeopleSoft. “Building on our technology leadership, PeopleSoft is providing the only pure internet solution with the industry’s smallest mobile device footprint, unparalleled ease-of-use and reliability, and true universal access from anywhere.”

“Companies should carefully consider the size of footprint, cost of ownership, and the complexity of technology when purchasing mobile solutions,” said Phillip Redman, Research Director at Gartner. “Solutions that provide simple and fast access, like those based on the internet, are compelling, and those that add disconnected capabilities are the future of mobile access.”

PeopleSoft is partnering with IBM to bring the power of DB2 to its mobile technology. PeopleSoft will leverage DB2 Everyplace as the local data store for PeopleSoft’s mobile applications. With a small footprint and its robust functionality, DB2 Everyplace provides a foundation for functionally rich mobile applications that can be quickly deployed to the end user.

“Leveraging DB2 Everyplace as the local data store device with PeopleSoft’s pure internet data synch technology will enable mobile professionals to access and synch data at their convenience,” said Janet Perna, General Manager of IBM Data Management Solutions. “The combination of DB2 Everyplace and PeopleSoft’s new mobile technology will empower PeopleSoft 8 customers with real-time information in mobile environments.”

PeopleSoft is also partnering with Research In Motion (RIM) to allow BlackBerry Wireless Handheld users to send and receive secure enterprise transactions, with no client or browser download required.

“PeopleSoft is delivering a leading-edge wireless solution,” said Jim Balsillie, Chairman and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. “With PeopleSoft’s new mobile technology, BlackBerry customers will be able to increase productivity and efficiency through mobile access to enterprise transactions.”

The PeopleSoft Mobile Agent is scheduled to ship to early access customers in Q4.
