Internet Pioneer In New Zealand
JUNE 26 2002
Kiwis have the rare chance to hear Internet pioneer Paul Vixie when he visits New Zealand from July 11-14. "Paul Vixie is a key creator in the development of the modern Internet and he will be sharing his knowledge at UniForum NZ's annual Conference at the Auckland Airport Centra" said UniForum NZ's Vice-President Sue Leader. "Paul is the author of modern BIND - the software which enables the Domain Name System to run. His expertise is unrivalled and New Zealand is fortunate to have the chance to learn from him." she said.
Vixie will be presenting two sessions at the UniForum NZ Conference. On the Friday Vixie will show innovations for fighting the modern plague - Spam email, and he will also present a full day Saturday workshop on the Domain Name System. "Paul's trip is sponsored by CISCO, and this support from a key Internet infrastructure provider signals how important Paul's work is and has been to the Internet in New Zealand as well as worldwide." Leader said.
Vixie is currently the Chief Technology Officer of Metromedia Fiber Network Inc (MFNX.O) and founded the Internet Software Consortium (ISC) in 1994, and now acts as Chairman of its Board of Directors. The ISC reflects Vixie's commitment to developing and maintaining production quality open source reference implementations of core Internet protocols. He is also responsible for overseeing the operation of F.root-servers.net, one of the thirteen Internet root domain name servers.
"The Conference organisers recognised the increasing use of Linux as a business system as well as a personal tool, and so organisers have included a variety of Linux-focused papers and tutorials, with input from the NZ Linux User Groups, and the UniForum NZ Conference 2002 departs from its historical format by interspersing the tutorial sessions with the main Conference streams so that small- to medium-sized business owners in particular can attend." Leader said
UniForum NZ is New Zealand's Open Systems Professionals organisation and is committed to the widespread use and development of open, interoperable computer systems. Members of UniForum NZ come from all major sectors of commerce, government and industry.
