Hewlett Packard Holds Preliminary Top Spot In PCs
Hewlett Packard Holds Preliminary Top Spot in Q3 New Zealand PC Market, Reports IDC
AUCKLAND, 21st November 2002 – Preliminary Q3 2002 New Zealand PC numbers have been released by IDC. The preliminary results show that the PC market in New Zealand reached 85,726 units in Q3 2002. This is a 9.4% decrease from Q2 and an 8.2% increase from the same quarter the year before.
“The usual Q3 slump wasn’t quite as pronounced as it had been in 2001,” said Darian Bird, IDC Hardware Analyst.
Q3 Market and Vendor Highlights
Hewlett-Packard led the way with 33.6%
market share overall, down from a massive 41.6% in Q2 2002,
the first post merger quarter. IBM and Dell jostled for
second and third position respectively, with The PC Company
close behind in fourth place overall and second in the
desktop market. “HP’s lead wasn’t as dominant in Q3, with
Dell and IBM trying to find cracks in the newly merged
vendor, ” commented Mr Bird.
HP led in all three categories; desktops, Intel servers, and most importantly notebooks.
Traditionally Toshiba takes the top spot in the notebook market but has relinquished that position twice this year.
One of the highlights for the market was Insite Technology’s performance. The Christchurch based-local PC assembler managed third position in the Intel server market following close behind IBM. Insite’s huge deal to Weta allowed it to become the largest local server vendor in New Zealand.
Outlook Positive year-on-year growth is encouraging, however moving forward, the economy will play a major role in the performance of the PC market. Many businesses are still cautious about IT spending and IT managers are holding off until the last moment to sign the cheques.
The corporate market will hold the most promise over the next twelve months as businesses upgrade for the first time since Y2K.
In the home market, the emergence of the low cost PC will be a new driver in the lead up to Christmas with sub-$1000 desktops becoming easily available.
