Bleakley claim totally irresponsible

The claim by GE-Free NZ campaigner Claire Bleakley that there may be a link between food derived from GE products and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is as outrageous as it is irresponsible, the Chairman of the Life Sciences Network, Dr William Rolleston said today.

“Speaking on behalf of GE-Free NZ she goes where no scientist would go without much greater evidence.

“It’s now really apparent how little Claire Bleakly understands about the science or about how infectious diseases such as SARS are understood to develop. Thank goodness we’ve got scientists who do have the knowledge and expertise to get much closer to the truth than GE-Free NZ.

“The worst part about this assertion is the completely obvious attempt to implicate genetic engineering products just because, in the mind of the anti-GE campaigners, any tactic of opposition is valid.

“This is a highly unethical claim - it’s clearly a case of opportunistic fear-mongering,” concluded Dr Rolleston.
