Mobil Celebrates Release Of Rare Saddlebacks On Motuihe Island

The release of saddlebacks on Auckland's Motuihe Island on Thursday 11 August is a major step in the island's restoration and Mobil Oil New Zealand Limited, a major supporter of Motuihe Trust, is joining in the celebrations.

"The release of saddlebacks on Motuihe Island is a proud day for Mobil," said Mobil Country Manager Mark Malpass at the release on Thursday. "Aucklanders will be able to get close to a beautiful bird species that once was common throughout the region. Mobil is pleased to be making such a tangible contribution to enhancing our environment and the quality of life of Aucklanders."

Mobil has been the major funder of the trust's work to restore the environment of Motuihe Island since 2003. Mobil's contribution is funding the release. The trust aims to restore, enhance and protect the indigenous flora and fauna and the significant historic sites of Motuihe Island. Part of that plan includes introducing rare native species back into the heart of Auckland. The saddleback release is a significant step in the project.

"Mobil was attracted to the project because we agreed with Motuihe Trust about the island's potential as an accessible sanctuary close to the centre of Auckland," said Mr Malpass. "We believed we could make a real difference to the life of Aucklanders by helping this important environmental project quickly progress.

"Mobil invests significant amounts of time and money in processes and equipment to ensure our business operates at the highest levels of environmental integrity. This commitment extends to investing in community projects that preserve and protect the environment in the places where we live and work," said Mr Malpass.

"Motuihe Island is a special place," he said. "It's a haven for boaties and anglers, and its sheltered sandy beaches make it a great picnic spot. This new phase in its development will widen its appeal to a new generation of visitors, while maintaining the island's place as an important recreational reserve for the people of Auckland. Mobil is proud to be working with Motuihe Trust and supporting this project."
