New Zealand's energy leaders prove their brilliance

27 organisations with proven innovation and brilliant thinking in energy efficiency or renewable energy projects have been selected as finalists in the EECA EnergyWise Awards 2006.

'The finalists are of an extremely high standard and showcase some very exciting projects,' said Heather Staley, Chief Executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) today. 'They clearly demonstrate that good energy management makes good business sense and can result in significant economic and environmental benefits.'

'Achieving New Zealand's potential for energy efficiency and renewable energy requires a cooperative effort. It is great to be able to acknowledge those innovative organisations who are doing something positive about their energy use and leading by example,' Ms Staley said.

Entries were received across nine categories. A winner will be selected in each category, and the best of these winning entries will receive the EECA Supreme Award for outstanding performance.

The entries are judged on the benefits of the project (energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy and greenhouse gas reductions), cost effectiveness, innovation, and sustainability (the continuation of the project and the ability for it to be replicated by other businesses).

The winners will be announced at the EECA EnergyWise Awards function to be held at the Langham Hotel in Auckland on Wednesday 1 March. Tickets are available by visiting www.eeca.govt.nz.

The winners of the above categories are eligible for the EECA Supreme Award.

EECA is implementing the Government's National Energy Efficiency and Conservation strategy and working to improve New Zealanders' energy choices.
