Trail bikers causing havoc in Whitireia Park
Trail bikers going off-road in Titahi Bay’s Whitireia Park are endangering public safety and damaging historic sites and vegetation.
This is concerning the Whitireia Park Board and Department of Conservation who are appealing to the public to report this illegal activity to the police.
Whitireia Park Board chair Allan Ross said trail bikers were ignoring signs requesting that traffic keep to formed roads within the park.
“There are many users of Whitireia Park who are being affected by a small group of irresponsible individuals. They are damaging important historical sites and vegetation and generally being a nuisance. They also pose a significant threat to the safety of legitimate park users by going off-road.”
Mr Ross said it was an ongoing problem which seemed to have increased in recent months, with other sites in Porirua facing similar issues with trail bike riders.
“I urge anyone who sees trail bike riders going off-road in Whitireia Park to contact the Porirua Police. Offenders can be issued trespass notices and may be prosecuted.”
