Auckland Conservation Board appointments

Conservation Minister Chris Carter this week announced the appointments to the Auckland Conservation Board.

“I’m pleased to announce that Jacqueline Beggs, Judith Gilbert and Carmen Kirkwood are new appointments”, said Mr Carter. “In addition, Jenny Kirk and Kathleen Walsh have been reappointed for a second term.”

“I am confident the new make up of the board represents a broad spectrum of knowledge and a wide range of local communities and will give sound advice to the Department of Conservation on its policy and directions.”

“Conservation boards play a vital role in providing independent advice on local conservation issues and are a means for local communities to be a part of conservation decisions.”

Department of Conservation Auckland Conservator Sean Goddard welcomed the new appointees to the Auckland Conservation Board.

“I look forward to working with the incoming members who will add a wealth of experience and skills to what has been a highly competent and committed board”, he said.

New members Jacqueline Beggs and Judith Gilbert will serve terms commencing on 16 October 2006 and expiring on 31 August 2009, while Carmen Kirkwood will serve a term from 16 October 2006 until 31 August 2007. Returning members Jenny Kirk and Kathleen Walsh will serve three year terms from 1 September 2006.

Mr Carter thanked the Auckland retiring board members Paddy Stafford-Bush, Tony Holman and Thomas de Thierry for their efforts and commitment during their time on the board.

New members:

- Jacqueline Beggs, of Auckland, has a strong background in terrestrial ecology. She currently works as a Lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland and brings sound knowledge of restoration projects in the Auckland region.

- Judy Gilbert, of Great Barrier Island, comes to the Board with a record of experience in community conservation organisations. She also brings important links to the Great Barrier Island community as well as personal experience in species translocations and pest management.

- Carmen Kirkwood, of Karaka, has a solid community background representing Maori. She has strong iwi networks as well as experience in Resource Management Act issues.

The other members of the board are: Peter Berg of Glendowie, Peter Crabb of Grey Lynn, Bruce Davies of Whangateau, Tomui Kaloni of Northcote, Estella Lee of Remuera, Mark Woolford of Epsom and Denise Yates of Huia.
