Untouched World Foundation calls for a ‘climate change’ in school education
Leading NZ lifestyle fashion company Untouched World’s charitable foundation today called for sustainable best practice to be introduced to the education curriculum.
Untouched World Foundation chairman Peri Drysdale said today a ‘climate change’ was needed in education as soon as possible.
``Our own charitable foundation is already at the forefront of working on sustainability for years. We have been achieving remarkable leadership results in four sites, in the Marlborough Sounds, Auckland, Christchurch and Ruapehu since 2002.
``This week we are sending another group of students to a Marlborough Sounds native reserve Blumine Island – along with myself and New Zealand Silver Ferns netball captain Adine Wilson - for biodiversity work there.’’
Since 2002, the Untouched World Foundation’s work on Blumine has radically changed the island’s capacity to become a potential haven for endangered bird-life, while part of developing a sustainable education programme for secondary and tertiary education.
The foundation, in partnership with Department of Conservation, Ministry of Education, the Auckland Regional Council, the Community Trust and BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust have also been working with young adults on growth issues in Auckland, resource management in Canterbury and with Kiwi in Ruapehu National Park.
``If as a nation we are going to take the whole issue of sustainability and climate change seriously, we must give our young people the knowledge to understand the issues and hands-on opportunities to become part of the solution,’’ foundation education adviser Barry Law said.
This week Untouched World foundation senior students will work with special needs students while restoring the island’s biodiversity. They will be viewed at times by visiting government and business officials.
Untouched World last month won the Deloitte top 200 business ethics award. They plan to open their fifth store in Wellington in March.
