Businesses know technology is the answer!

High energy businesses know technology is the answer!

Eighteen businesses with high energy use are saving an estimated 3,400 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, thanks to grants available from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

The eighteen businesses have been awarded grants of up to $100k each as part of an initiative which encourages industry sectors to take the first step towards implementing energy efficient technologies.

'Rising energy costs and growing concern over climate change means that having an energy efficient business is becoming more important, said Murray Bell, EECA Business Manager. 'It is vital New Zealand's energy intensive businesses take control of their energy use in order to remain competitive.'

'These eighteen businesses are significantly reducing their emissions and helping to address climate change. The combined CO2 emissions saved as a result of these initiatives is equivalent to taking nearly 1,000 cars off the road each year', said Mr Bell.

EECA's cash grants are available to businesses in energy intensive sectors. Grants of up to 40% of the capital cost of the project are available, with a maximum of $100,000 for each grant.

A number of grants have already been issued to technologies in varying sectors.

One of the grant recipients Canterbury Laundry Services installed two new dryers. The monitoring showed that not only are the dryers more efficient but the reduction in their drying time allows higher throughput, increasing their business' sales.

The grants are designed to make it easier for businesses to access new technologies.

The projects EECA is looking to support are energy efficient technologies that are commercially available but are not yet common place in New Zealand.

The projects range from light weight trawl gear, energy efficient vacuum drying machine for plastic, to a tallow operated boiler.
