NZIF Announces Two New Fellows

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry Inc (NZIF) elected Dr. Chris Goulding and Dr. Andrew McEwen Fellows of the Institute at its AGM in Palmerston North this week.

In announcing the honour at the Institute’s annual conference, outgoing NZIF President Jacquetta (Ket) Bradshaw noted that being made a Fellow recognised leadership in forestry.

Dr Chris Goulding has had a long career in forest research, joining the NZ Forest Research Institute in Rotorua in 1972. Now a Principal Scientist at NZ Forest Research Institute Ltd (Scion) Dr Goulding’s field of forest science has been forest management and mensuration, forest inventory and resource monitoring, management science and decision support systems. He has made significant contributions to New Zealand forestry, represents New Zealand on two IUFRO committees and is the NZ Representative on the IUFRO International Council.

Dr Andrew McEwen’s election recognises his contribution to forest practice and science particularly in the field of mensuration and management modelling, his role as one of the “Senior Statesmen” of the forest industry, and also his outstanding service to NZIF including establishment of a successful newsletter, service as Vice-President and on local committees. His recognition as the inaugural recipient of the NZIF Forester of the Year award in 2005 is tangible reflection of this contribution.

Both Dr Goulding and Dr McEwen have served the Institute throughout their forestry careers, as members, local section representation, presentation of papers at NZIF Conferences and articles in the NZ Journal of Forestry.

Andrew joined the Institute as a student member in 1966, became a Full Member in 1972 and a Registered Forestry Consultant in 2000. He has been NZIF Vice President since 2004 and became President following the AGM. Dr Goulding has recently been elected to the NZIF Council.
