Celebrating the beginnings of The Nest--Wellington Zoo's new conservation hospital

Wellington Zoo will celebrate the beginning of the construction of its new animal hospital--The Nest--by sealing a time capsule with the help of Hon Steve Chadwick, Minister of Conservation, this Thursday (25 September), Zoo Chief Executive, Karen Fifield, announced today.

‘Our new animal hospital, The Nest, is the largest and most ambitious project Wellington Zoo has ever undertaken. We want to celebrate this occasion by sealing a time capsule, to be displayed in the new hospital, which will contain artefacts from our current animal hospital and the Zoo as it is today,’ says Karen.

The Nest will be a hub for conservation in the Wellington region, as we will have the capacity to treat sick and injured native wildlife, alongside our Zoo animals. The inclusion of a salt water pool in the building means that we will be able to treat marine wildlife as well.’

‘We are thrilled to be building such a significant community asset, and that once The Nest is complete, our Zoo visitors will be able to come and witness the conservation work normally done behind the scenes at the Zoo.’

The capsule will be sealed at 11.30 and opportunites for photos made available at this time.
