Science New Zealand Welcomes Chief Science Adviser

Science New Zealand warmly welcomes the appointment of Professor Peter Gluckman as the first Prime Minister’s Chief Science Adviser.

John Morgan, the Chair of Science New Zealand and CEO of NIWA, said:

“We warmly welcome the role, and the person appointed.

“Attracting someone of the calibre of Peter Gluckman gives the role credibility. Aligning it with the Prime Minister enhances the mana of research, science & technology in government and the nation.

“Science New Zealand has long advocated such a role. It helps strengthen the science voice within and across the whole of government; provides an authoritative voice to engage with the public on scientific issues; and promotes the importance of science for New Zealand.

“One person alone cannot do all this. So we offer our full support to Professor Gluckman.

“The Crown Research Institutes and our 4,400 staff are the largest group of science researchers in New Zealand. We, too, are committed to ensuring that New Zealand engages with, and benefits from, science and technology.

“There are so many issues and opportunities within New Zealand where science can contribute ideas and solutions. This appointment signals to the nation that science has a role at the centre of our nation’s economic prosperity and welfare.”
