Chief Science Adviser’s optimism and ambition for role of science in New Zealand applauded
Professor Peter Gluckman, the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Adviser, has set out an ambitious, optimistic yet achievable platform for his role, says the chief executive of Science New Zealand, Anthony Scott.
“Science New Zealand will work with Dr Gluckman, and indeed with all who see the possibilities of our science and society and have the ambition for New Zealand to succeed in the 21st century.
“He has painted the big picture very well. Science has been a key part of New Zealand’s achievement – but can do so much more; New Zealand science research can make a difference to the nation’s wealth and well-being; and science working as part of our society certainly does have the potential to transform New Zealand.
“So he has issued a challenge, to the nation to take the possibilities of science’s contribution seriously and to the science community to lift its game and to engage with our society - from communities to businesses to the Crown - most constructively and effectively.
“Science New Zealand shares that ambition and is fully committed to that task.”
