Government’s science priorities document welcomed

Government’s science priorities document welcomed by Royal Society of New Zealand

The Royal Society of New Zealand’s President, Dr Garth Carnaby, applauds the Government’s recently released document looking at New Zealand’s research, science and technology priorities.

He says the document is “ground breaking”.

“It separates straightforward political decisions about the broad allocation of public resources to specific research and development activities, from more specific resourcing issues around Crown Research Institutes.

“The CRIs provide a significant proportion of the science conducted in New Zealand and employ a similar proportion of the scientists.

"Key issues which have frustrated scientists and caused instability in the CRIs for a long time, are being addressed at the same time by a separate high level task force. Addressing them properly will greatly benefit the science community and the economy.”

The Royal Society of New Zealand will be providing feedback on the document.
