IRL Chair congratulates winning pair

IRL Board Chair Keith McConnell today congratulated Drs Jeff Tallon and Bob Buckley today on jointly winning the inaugural Prime Minister’s Science Prize

Dr Bob Buckley and Dr Jeff Tallon, who are world-leading experts in the field of high temperature superconductivity (HTS), today received the award and prize money of $500,000, of which $400,000 will go to IRL for the continued development of the technology.

“Jeff and Bob are two of this country’s most outstanding scientists and are recognised as leaders in the field of high temperature superconductivity both in New Zealand and abroad.”

Keith McConnell commended their dedication to their field of endeavour. “Over the last twenty years Jeff and Bob have made great strides in understanding the fundamental science of HTS.

“Furthermore, their work on applying the technology in an industrial context has been crucial in the development of the emerging HTS industry in New Zealand.”

Keith McConnell says the work of Drs Tallon and Buckley demonstrates just how important New Zealand science is to our economy and the potential that science has in enabling all New Zealanders to realise the living standards to which they aspire.
