2012 Science Festival appoints new Associate Director

MEDIA RELEASE – Friday 3 February 2012

2012 Science Festival appoints new Associate Director

New NZISF associate director Laura Madden describes herself as “passionate about science and master of GTD” (getting things done). The young, British-born events manager has recently been appointed to assist with preparations for the eighth New Zealand International Science Festival.

This year the festival will take place in Dunedin, from 30 June to 8 July, with an array of innovative and exciting hands-on events based around the theme ‘what makes us tick?’

According to festival director Chris Green, Laura’s skills and experience in youth-led events will be a major asset to the 2012 festival. “Laura’s role is to help make sure that the festival showcases and celebrates science and the important role it plays in our everyday lives,” says Chris.

Laura has a science background and up until recently was part of the team behind the Inspiring Stories Trust, an initiative that supports and encourages young New Zealanders making a difference in their communities. Laura was also involved in running the inaugural Festival for the Future, a national event held last year in Wellington which brought together a diverse group of creative, innovative young Kiwis over a varied programme of activities to help kick start projects for a brighter future and re-imagine a more vibrant, sustainable New Zealand.

Laura believes her skills will assist in bringing the 2012 science festival programme to life. “I want to help make sure events in the programme are really inspiring but also fun, for all ages. Keep an eye out for our programme due out in May and ‘like’ us on Facebook – we are planning competitions, street science events including anatomical ‘body painting’, movie nights and some really interesting dining experiences!”

Background on the New Zealand International Science Festival
New Zealand’s only International Science Festival has developed, managed and run six festivals in Dunedin every two years since 1998.
In 2012, the theme of the eighth biennial festival will be “what makes us tick?”, setting the scene for nine days of inspiring and fun-filled events.
Highlights of the festival include appearances by leading international scientists, as well as a variety of stimulating workshops, stunts, street science events, expos and entertainment.
The 2012 festival is generously supported by a number of sponsors, funding partners and volunteers; without their support this festival would not be possible.
Up to 40 individual volunteers help run festival events, and thousands of visitors from all over New Zealand are expected to participate. www.scifest.org.nz
