New award offered for top secondary school science students

Students selected to take part in the prestigious Genesis Energy Realise the Dream event for an excellent piece of science research will this year have the chance to win an additional award.

The Royal Society of New Zealand is delighted to announce the American Ambassador Outstanding Award, which will enable the winner to represent New Zealand at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2013.

Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-university science competition. Annually it provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from about 70 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research.

Royal Society of New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Di McCarthy says she is thrilled a top New Zealand science student will be given this opportunity.

“The Genesis Energy Realise the Dream Event is all about inspiring our top science secondary school students to pursue a career in research and what a fantastic opportunity this will be. We thank the U.S. Embassy for adding this fantastic award to those already available for Realise the Dream participants.”

US Ambassador to New Zealand David Huebner commented that the award was an extension of the long standing scientific relationship between the United States and New Zealand, underpinned by over 50 years of active bilateral cooperation in Antarctica.

The relationship also features collaborative projects on issues relating to climate change, renewable energy, green technologies, food security, and the commercialization of new technologies.

“I am thrilled to offer this award to the Royal Society of New Zealand, and support the participation of an aspiring Kiwi scientist in Intel ISEF. Scientific collaboration between the two countries continues to be one of the touchstones of our dynamic relationship.”

Nominations to take part in the Genesis Energy Realise the Dream close on 12 October. A student can be nominated by their teacher, science and technology fair, CREST or any other national competition that is science and technology based. The top 20 will be selected, with announcements of participants to be made in November.
