French Embassy illuminates science in Wellington

The Embassy of France in New Zealand is pleased to support a science evening presented by Professor Graham Le Gros, Director of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, at the Residence of France in Wellington on October 22nd.

The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s leading independent medical research institute, and is building closer connections with the French medical research community to develop better treatments like cancer, asthma and allergies.

The evening was prompted by Ambassador H.E. M. Laurent Contini’s interest in medical science, and the key role that French scientists play in accelerating the pace of medical progress at the Malaghan Institute.

French Scientists Dr Tiffany Bouchery Smith (Research Fellow - Allergic and Parasitic Diseases Programme) and Dr Olivier Gasser (Senior Research Fellow – Vaccine Therapy Programme) provide an international dimension to the Malaghan Institute’s leading research.

This reception brings together more than eighty scientists and supporters of medical research and provides a platform for Institute scientists to share progress on their latest research.

"The Malaghan Institute is recognised on an international level as a leading organisation in medical research. Their recent success with developing a vaccine for asthma has been qualified as groundbreaking and considerable progress which will benefit research efforts around the world. The Embassy of France is delighted to be working with the institute to promote medical developments and to strengthen French and New Zealand partnerships in the scientific field.", emphasises French cultural and scientific counsellor, Mr. Raynald Belay.

Professor Graham Le Gros thanks the Embassy of France for supporting the work of the Institute, “Scientific breakthroughs that lead to the development of treatments and technologies to address diseases like cancer and asthma cannot be accomplished by any single entity alone. By its very nature, science is a collaborative enterprise that transcends individual scientific disciplines and national boundaries. I thank Ambassador H.E. M. Laurent Contini for this event and his support for strong research collaborations between New Zealand and France.”
