Olive Ridley Sea Turtle showing encouraging signs
The Olive Ridley Sea Turtle receiving care at Wellington Zoo’s The Nest Te Kōhanga has shown encouraging signs of movement. However, the female turtle, nicknamed ‘Ridley’, remains in a critical condition.
While the Veterinary Team are encouraged to see Ridley moving about, they are still waiting for a sign that her stomach is working properly so that they can begin feeding her. In the meantime, she is receiving fluids to keep her hydrated. After showing signs of movement, she has been relocated to a larger pool which will give her more room to move. The pool provides a warm water environment to keep her temperature stable and her skin damp.
A CT scan has been scheduled for Friday to find out whether Ridley has any internal injuries, which will help the Veterinary Team build a better picture of her overall health. Once they have the results from the scan, the Veterinary Team will be able to update her prognosis.
The Nest Te Kōhanga is Wellington Zoo’s animal hospital, which provides care for Zoo animals, native wildlife from all over New Zealand, and the occasional visitor from far-off shores.
Wellington Zoo has been in contact with Kelly Tarlton’s, who have offered to help Ridley with their Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Release programme once she is medically fit.
