Sunshine and showers

MetService News Release
Monday 14 December 2015

This week will see a mixture of sunshine and showers - and generally more settled weather than was seen in the weekend.

An active front moved over New Zealand during the weekend, bringing rain and strong winds to many places. Cold temperatures in the upper atmosphere also supported hail and thunderstorms over parts of the South Island. Canterbury in particular received some spectacular hail and thunderstorms on Sunday and there was even a tornado photographed near Geraldine.

A weaker front will move north over New Zealand on Tuesday and Wednesday.Showers are expected with this front as it moves north and there is the possibility of some more hail and thunder in Canterbury and Otago during Tuesday afternoon and evening. However, it should be fine in Auckland for the AC/DC concert on Tuesday night.

"Overall, this week is looking more settled, just in time for the end of the school year," said MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

"There should be more dry weather than wet weather, especially for the North Island, providing the opportunity for people to get out and about in the run up to Christmas. But it's still a good idea to keep an eye on the latest forecasts at metservice.com to see whether the showers are likely to affect you," said Glassey.
