A settled weekend for many - Thursday 3 March 2016

A settled weekend for many - Thursday 3 March 2016

A ridge of high pressure is currently sitting over the country, which means fine weather for many to end the week. However, a front approaching the south of the South Island tonight will bring rain or showers to the West Coast, and scattered falls to Southland. Into Friday, cloud and patchy drizzle will affect parts of the west of the North Island during the morning, and occasional rain is expected for west and south coasts of the South Island. “However, for most people, it is looking sunny,” said MetService Meteorologist Claire Flynn.

Into the weekend, yet another ridge of high pressure moves onto the North Island. It is expected to be mainly fine for the Round the Bays race in Auckland, and the Big Camp Out, though there is a chance of a light shower about on Saturday. Those in Taupo for the Ironman race or Wellington for the Karapoti mountain bike race can also expect to see some sunshine, after morning cloud breaks up. Others in the North Island should also see sunshine, although there will be some cloudy periods too.

For the South Island, another weak front is expected to approach the south again this weekend. This will mean rain or showers for the West Coast again, though this should ease on Sunday. In the east, it is expected to be mainly sunny, however Southland and Clutha are likely to get some patchy rain on Saturday.

“Temperatures in the east of the country are expected to warm up again this weekend, with many places reaching the late twenties, and some places possibly reaching thirty degrees,” Flynn said. “However, a cool change is expected to sweep northwards up the country during the first half of next week.”
