A cold front moving up the east of the South Island will bring showers to Otago and Southland today. However, an area of high pressure moving over the country on Wednesday is expected to stop the cold front in its tracks and bring settled weather for most people for the next few days. A low pressure system will then approach from the Tasman towards the end of the week, bringing rain to many.

“Apart from southern parts of the South Island which will see showers and the chance of thunder today, and then rain for the southwest later on Thursday, the weather is expected to be quite settled this week through until Friday,” said MetService Meteorologist Claire Flynn. “Canterbury is looking to be quite cloudy on Wednesday, with patchy drizzle in the morning. For other places, it should be mainly fine.”

The weather is set to change at the end of the week, however, as a low pressure system in the Tasman approaches. Rain is expected to develop on Friday for the top half of the North Island. Northern and western parts of the South Island are also expected to see rain develop on Friday, with scattered rain also about Canterbury. As the system crosses the country, the lower half of the North Island is also expected to see some scattered rain during the weekend.

“Those looking forward to the Oxfam Trailwalker in Whakatane this weekend should probably bring their wet weather gear,” Flynn advised. “It is also looking like a wet start to the Godzone Adventure race in the Tasman District, kicking off this weekend.”

As the low pressure system moves away later in the weekend, another cold front is expected to move up the South Island.
