As one low departs, another arrives

A low pressure system will continue to bring wet weather to many places until Tuesday, when the low finally moves away to the east of New Zealand. However, another significant low makes its way onto the North Island during Wednesday.

“As well as warnings and watches for heavy rain in some places, people should also be aware of strong winds, particularly from Taranaki to Hawkes Bay northwards where severe northwest gales are possible on Monday,” warned MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey. Large waves are also expected to pummel the west coast of the North Island until Tuesday.

The weather should improve on Tuesday as the current low departs the country, but another low is expected to bring more wet weather to the North Island and upper South Island during Wednesday and Thursday. Eastern parts of the North Island from Gisborne to Wairarapa, who have had well below average rainfall recently, are likely to get some decent rain from this next system. “A little bit of rain is spreading across to the east of the North Island with the current system, but not a lot. The rain from the next system is looking more promising for them,” said Glassey.
