A big weather week is just getting started as a deepening low moves out of the northern Tasman Sea and muscles its way across the country. Severe Weather Warnings and Watches have been issued, and there will be many more updates to follow.

MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts said, “This will be a significant and high impact event with extremely large rainfall amounts for some, which could cause flooding.

"For the already-soggy regions in the north of the North Island, land-slips are a real possibility following on from an extremely wet March,” Coutts said.

Rain is likely for much of the North Island on Tuesday, with the heaviest falls expected in Taranaki and Whanganui starting tonight, but heavy falls and localised downpours are possible anywhere over the Island. The heavy falls then spread southwards on Wednesday onto the north and east of the South Island, before easing off on Thursday.

Strong or gale force winds also accompany the low, most noticeable around the southwest of the North Island and north and west of the South Island tomorrow.

The low also helps generate a significant swell for the end of the week, although weather across the country will improve on Friday due to an incoming ridge of high pressure.

“As there is some uncertainty about the exact depth and track of this low, the details may change - so be sure to keep up to date with the weather and our latest forecasts,” commented Coutts.
