Psychologists envision future at Auckland conference

More than 300 New Zealand psychologists will envision the profession’s future, celebrate its successes and reflect on its history at The New Zealand Psychological Society (NZPsS) 50th Jubilee conference at the University of Auckland from September 5-8.

NZPsS is the largest professional association for psychologists in New Zealand with around 1870 members, including students. The theme of this year’s conference is “The spiral of connection: Psychology in the past, present, and future”.

“We’ll honour the past with multi-media displays of past presidents and NZPsS members, and a history of the society,” explains NZPsS president, Quentin Abraham.

“We’ll also celebrate the present by networking with colleagues, and hearing about contemporary insights from confirmed keynote local and international speakers Siautu Alefaio, Tania Cargo, Margaret Dudley, Anthony Grant, Philippa Howden-Chapman, Patrick McGorry and John Sommers-Flanagan, further presenters, as well as presenting members’ most recent insights.”

Mr Abraham says the conference will embrace the digital era by launching electronic posters that allow interactive access through a touch screen.

Conference highlights include:

International Roundtable - Equity: Making Psychology Available for Everyone. Thursday, September 6, 5.30pm in Lecture Theatre 260-098.

Past Presidents and Current Students Debate, Friday, September 7, 12.15pm. Plenary lecture theatre 260-098.

Society Women working for change. Friday, September 7, 3.05pm in the small foyer 260-088. Society Women working for change – the first twenty years.

In this debate three students will argue for the need to hold on to the psychology of our elders to go into the future and three past presidents will argue against stating that as social scientists we must we must let go of our old psychological theories, so we can move into the future.
