$7.1 million for world-class biomedical research technology hub in New Zealand
The Hugh Green Foundation has pledged $7.1 million to build a world-class biomedical research technology hub at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, marking a new era of science discovery in New Zealand.
The Hugh Green Cytometry Centre, led by Head of Research Technology Kylie Price, will underpin the Malaghan Institute’s immunology research across cancer, asthma and allergy, gut health, brain health and infectious diseases. The centre will also support a range of New Zealand science organisations including in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, neuroscience and marine biology.
Spread over a five-year period, the $7.1 million investment will enable the Institute to develop a purpose-built centre using state-of-the-art cytometry, microscopy and histology technology platforms to investigate the inner workings of the cells and tissues of our body in health and disease settings.
Ms Price says that technological capability has been the driving force behind the Institute’s immunological and biomedical discoveries, as well as supporting science research for the likes of the Cawthron Institute and Fertility Associates.
“Our scientists want to take their research discoveries and develop them into therapies with real impact. This renewed partnership with the Hugh Green Foundation will enable our scientists to achieve their goals, create for New Zealand a globally-recognised biomedical research centre that will improve human health, and ensure New Zealand has a cutting- edge science technology base into the future.”
The Hugh Green Foundation, a charitable trust dedicated to improving living standards and the social wellbeing of New Zealand communities, has been supporting the Malaghan Institute for more than eight years, helping build the Institute’s capability in flow cytometry – a scientific technique used to give vital information about cells for health research and diagnostics.
Hugh Green Foundation Chief Executive Adrienne Thurston says the Foundation is a big believer in building long-term resilient partnerships with the organisations it funds.

“This investment reflects the deep and trusted relationship we have built with the Malaghan Institute over the last decade and the impact that has already been demonstrated.”
Director of the Malaghan Institute Professor Graham Le Gros says the Hugh Green Foundation’s support is game changing for both the Institute and New Zealand and will have a lasting impact on the health research sector.
“Philanthropy has a major role to play in what we do. This investment will provide unprecedented scientific capabilities to fuel our research and discovery, enabling us to achieve significantly more for New Zealand.”
