Brief break before further
rain
A weather system presently bringing rain to eastern parts of the North Island is expected to move away as we head through Monday, with Watches and Warnings for heavy rain in Hawkes Bay and the Tararua District expiring by the end of the day. Once that has cleared, the North Island sees a settled couple of days, with Tuesday looking like the sunniest day of the week there.
The next weather feature to affect the country will be a front moving on from the south, with rain affecting Fiordland and Westland from Tuesday.
MetService Meteorologist Claire Nickson, says: “A Severe Weather Watch has been issued for heavy rain about Fiordland and southern Westland from late Tuesday, with more Watches and Warnings likely to be issued as the event nears.”
“Temperatures will warm in the east of the South Island in a northwesterly flow ahead of the front, before being replaced by rain as the front moves northwards during Wednesday, reaching the North Island on Thursday.”
A developing low associated with the front will bring a burst of heavy rain to much of the North Island as the rain band passes over on Thursday, with the heaviest rain expected about Mt. Taranaki. As the low moves away on Friday, it leaves behind it a cool southerly flow.
“As we head into the weekend, the rain will ease, but the southerly flow will continue to bring showers to areas exposed to the south,” says Nickson.
