Mainly settled weather and above average temperatures

As a ridge of high pressure continues to dominate New Zealand’s weather for the coming days, MetService is forecasting mainly settled weather with warmer temperatures in store for the country from Saturday.

MetService Meteorologist Kyle Lee, says “On Saturday maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be well above average for May around the South Island and southern North Island.”

“The Capital will only drop to around 14 and 13C overnight Saturday and Sunday respectively, a good 6 and 5C higher than the May average. With the east coast and far south seeing temperatures 6-7C warmer than their average May temperatures,” explains MetService Meteorologist Kyle Lee.

While it will be warmer, a few weak fronts are expected to bring a few showers to parts of the South Island, namely the far south and the west coast during today and the weekend.

A weak front brings a few showers to the east and west coast of the country tonight but tomorrow the ridge of high pressure continues to build resulting in a mainly fine Friday for most.

The only region in store for potential Severe Weather is Fiordland as a weak front reaches there late Saturday and will stall over the area into Sunday, bringing a risk of some heavy rain accumulations for the region.

Looking further ahead it seems that the settled weather continues over the country into the start of next week.
