Despite the weather conditions at this year’s Honda International Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville last weekend, the Team Honda riders still shone in the mud.
In the MX 1 class, Christchurch’s Justin McDonald and Rotorua’s Michael Phillips brought their Honda CRF450s home behind ex-World MX2 Champion Tauranga’s Ben Townley sharing second place overall.
In the one-off Invitation International race for the covered Woodville Trophy, it was Mc Donald who finished first, after both Townley and Phillips withdrew, one with a clutch problem brought about by the mud and the other after a heavy fall.
“At the beginning of the race, I had the throttle pinned, but once the crew signaled Townley was out. I backed off and cruised to the finish,” McDonald said after the race.
In the MX 2 class Tauranga’s Peter Broxholme took a fifth and a fourth to finishing fourth overall on his Honda CRF250R9 after topping the qualifying table. Meanwhile Taupo’s Cameron Dillon, who qualified second fastest, was forced out of race one after a heavy first turn fall, but came back to finish third in the second race giving him tenth overall.
The event was finally called short by the organisers, due to concerns for public safety, brought about by the weather conditions.
“The conditions were probably the worst we have seen in ten years, but the team still rode well,” said Team Manager Shayne King as the team cleaned up.
