Mercury Energy Rugby Club Keeps Thousands of Junior Rugby Players Safe and Smiling

The Mercury Energy Rugby Club is safeguarding the smiles of thousands of kids this rugby season by giving every junior rugby player who registers to play for an official Auckland or North Harbour club a free mouthguard.

Not only will the Mercury Energy Rugby Club hand out more than 13,000 free mouthguards as part of the official registration pack, it’s also giving every junior rugby player the chance to watch all Auckland NPC games at Eden Park free with a complimentary season pass.

This junior rugby initiative follows the successful launch of the Mercury Energy Rugby Club, a programme that gives Mercury Energy customers access to special deals and discounted tickets at Blues, Auckland and North Harbour games.

Auckland Rugby Referee Manager, Mike Elliott, says the Mercury Energy Rugby Club mouthguards will encourage kids, parents and coaches to kick-start the season with good safety habits.
“A mouthguard is a junior player’s most important piece of safety gear. It protects children from mouth, lip, teeth and jaw injuries and can also help reduce the effects of concussion. The rule is: no mouthguard, no play, so this extra support from the Mercury Energy Rugby Club will reinforce this important message.”

ACC data shows there were almost 1500 new dental claims in the 2009 rugby season. Programme Manager for Sport, Joseph Harawira, says that around half these injuries happen at training, as players and coaches can underestimate the risk of less competitive sessions.

“Giving kids their own mouthguard sends a strong safety message to parents and coaches. This is a great initiative that will hopefully encourage kids to adopt safe playing habits for life.”
Mercury Energy’s general manager James Munro says, “We’re excited our new partnership is helping rugby-mad families to get involved in the game – at a grassroots and professional level. Mercury Energy Rugby Club members will benefit from exclusive offers including 20% off tickets to the Family Area at all Auckland and North Harbour Rugby home games, fantastic stadium food and beverage deals and discounts on Blues merchandise.”

It’s easy to join the Mercury Energy Rugby Club. Just visit www.mercuryrugbyclub.co.nz

The Mercury Energy Rugby Club’s free mouthguards are available at Auckland Rugby’s 20 official clubs over registration weekend (26th-27 February 2010) or North Harbour Rugby’s 11 junior club registration evenings happening throughout February and March. The complimentary NPC season pass will be mailed to all junior registered players prior to the start of the NPC season.

The Mercury Energy Rugby Club makes it easier for its members to support their team with fantastic discounts on tickets and stadium catering.
