Trophies On Tour Kick Off
Community Events For RWC 2011
Queenstown locals can be a part of rugby history in the making when The New Zealand Rugby Union treats the public to an up close encounter with their most famous trophies on Tuesday 22 February at the Queenstown Recreation Ground between 4pm and 8pm. The prestigious cups will be in Queenstown as part of a nationwide tour when for the first time the public can see all the trophies currently held by the NZRFU. Those on display will include the Bledisloe Cup, Tri Nations Trophy, Hillary Shield, IRB Woman’s Rugby World Cup and IRB Junior World Championship Trophy.
The Trophy Tour kicks off a growing schedule of community focused events that lead up to Rugby World Cup 2011 in September of this year. Otago Academy players will be there sharing their passing, catching and kicking skills and there will also be a rippa game for all the children to enjoy. Locals will be able to register for the 2011 club season and Brett Compton, the Otago Rugby Football Unions Club School Liaison Officer, said the Otago Rugby Football Union will also be in attendance advising people how they can get involved in rugby at any age, be that playing, coaching or administration.
”There's a role for everyone in New Zealand rugby and we would love to have you involved so what better year to join than in Rugby World Cup year, the year we will again confirm our true international status as the best rugby playing and supporting nation in the world,” Brett said.
Keen fans will be able to have their photo taken with the trophies and there will be plenty of entertainment including a bouncy castle and water slide, sausage sizzle, refreshments and All Black merchandise available for purchase.
Queenstown will host the Irish, English and Romanian teams during Rugby World Cup 2011 and a schedule for community engagement during their time in the resort is currently being negotiated. Team schedules will balance a mix of training, recreation and community events and the Irish team’s visit will also include both an official airport and civic welcome, with Queenstown being their official port of entry to New Zealand.
