Rare collectors’ items go under the hammer at Queenstown Auto Extravaganza

A signed racing helmet by British Formula 1 driver Jensen Button and a framed steering wheel signed by world champion British Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton will be going under the hammer in Queenstown this weekend.

The auction will be held as part of the Queenstown Auto Extravaganza Solid Gold FM Blues Party Night this Saturday night (26 February). Other auction highlights include a framed and signed All Blacks rugby jersey from the current squad, and a framed full size guitar signed by ACDC band members.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Extravaganza’s charity, the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The three-day Queenstown Auto Extravaganza is being held this weekend (Friday 25 – Sunday 27 February) and the auction prizes are expected to draw enthusiasts from around the country, according to committee chairman Miles Wilson.

“It’s just incredible to secure these items. They will be highly sought after and they’re a great fundraising opportunity for the foundation,” he said.

The auction will take place between performances by Mike Frost and the Icemen’s performance at the Solid Gold FM Blues Party Night, hosted at Queenstown Memorial Hall on Saturday 26 February.

The weekend’s activities kick start on Friday 25 February with a 200-strong Evening Car Cruise to a mystery photographic location. On Saturday 26 the Rilean “What’s in your Garage?” outdoor public car show takes place alongside Queenstown’s first indoor Vincent Holdings Salon of Style NZ Motor racing exhibition at the Queenstown Events Centre. Saturday night’s Solid Gold FM Blues Party Night is followed on Sunday 27 with the QT Rides Eighth Mile Car Sprint in Dalefield, racing some of the biggest and fastest cars from the show.

Celebrity guest John ‘Cocksy’ Cocks will be judging the Rilean “What’s in your Garage?” event, joined by New Zealand pro racer Jonny Reid, who will officially open the weekend at the Evening Car Cruise mystery destination on Friday.
