Edgell battles through Taupo NZV8 races

It wasn’t the weekend leading NZV8 racer Tim Edgell was hoping for, but he maintained a top ten championship position after the penultimate round of the BNT V8s Championship in Taupo.

Edgell headed to the three-race weekend at the Taupo Motorsport Park with the satisfaction of having scored his first round win four weeks earlier at Manfeild in Feilding.

The North Shore-based driver looked to be in strong form during the testing sessions on Saturday achieving the second-quickest lap time in the #26 Chester-BNT Falcon. “But then we put some new tyres on and, strangely, the pace wasn’t there. We’re still reviewing that situation, but having missed qualifying within the top ten, it makes Sunday’s three races just that much harder,” said Edgell.

The first ten lap race saw Edgell taking on another competitor, who locked his brakes and left Edgell unable to avoid making contact. A drive-through penalty was issued by officials which make Edgell could do little more than simply finish the race at the back of the pack.

“In the second race, I was reasonably pleased to get through to 10th place, having started 19th.

“Then, in the reverse grid race three, the start was a horror. Once I got through that, I did improve to tenth, but then the driveshaft broke, so that was that.

“Of course there are always positive aspects to every weekend of racing, no matter that it wasn’t the weekend we were looking for. We did manage some valuable tests on car set-up, and now we’ll go through our usual thorough preparation before the final in Hamilton from 15 to 17 April.”

Edgell has the lap record for the NZV8 class on the Hamilton street circuit and also set pole position for last year’s NZV8 races on the ITM 400 V8 Supercar support-card.

“So we do know we can do very well in Hamilton. With this year’s set of three races being the championship final, the racing is going to be super intense. We’ll be giving it everything we’ve got!”

Edgell also appreciates the ongoing support of the following sponsors: Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom, BNT, Marley, Hansen Products, Fuchs, Tru-Test Group, North Harbour Ford, Roca, FujiFilm, Element 82 Ltd, Wurth NZ, Journey on Roadside Solutions and Temperzone/Hitachi Heat Pumps.
