GRAND FINAL
REPORT
It was a match most anticipated by the
fans as a huge contingency of supporters for New Zealand
Secondary Schools (NZSS) and Aotearoa Maori flocked to
Rotorua’s Energy Events Centre today.
The opening quarter was similar to the last time they met as New Zealand dominated, finding their feet right on the opening whistle, working as a unit on both attack and defence. Co-Captain Sam Sinclair and Whitney Souness worked with patience initially to ensure that safe ball found the hands of Goal Shoot Maia Wilson, but by the end of the quarter they were confident to let it go, placing pin point accurate passes from the transverse.
Aotearoa Maori introduced Grace Kukutai into Centre in the second and was successful in creating more movement through court. Kukutai also stuck tighter to Sinclair and managed to get her hands to but it was the stifling defence of Fa’amu Ross (WD), Jamie-Lee Price (GD) and Holly Fowler (GK) that restricted any flow the Aotearoa Maori team gained. The NZSS defensive combination has gone from strength to strength throughout this tournament and all those that have come up against them have had a tough ask.
The New Zealand Secondary Schools team did not take their foot off the pedal, even when introducing their bench in the 4th, all players came on strong. Aotearoa Maori had a strong finish with some spectacular defence by Goal Defence Isarena Chan.
Final Score 42-16 to New Zealand Secondary Schools
