SUBJECT: HONDURAS LIKES THE IDEA OF A LATIN AMERICAN
CANDIDATE FOR UNESCO DIRECTOR-GENERAL POST
REF: SECSTATE 130914
POLOFF delivered reftel demarche on the election for the 2009
UNESCO Director General position to the Director of
Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jose
Lorenzana, on December 16. Lorenzana noted that Honduras had
been approached by Oman, Egypt and Morocco regarding each
countries' own candidate for the position. After hearing
that the United States would like to see a Latin American
candidate, Lorenzana excitedly began to think of possible
Honduran candidates. POLOFF will follow up with MFA and
report any subsequent GOH decision.
